I’ve been offline most of the day because my wifi likes to take time off, and I’m just now learning there was a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebration in Kansas City. I understand one person has died, a few are critical, and three people are in custody. We know nothing about the shooters at this time. If we find out that this shooting is somehow connected to all the nonsense about Taylor Swift, examples need to be made of those shooters. Really nasty examples.
I understand Jack Smith has filed his response to Donald Trump at the Supreme Court already. The gist of it is to get the SCOTUS to act without delay.
I’m going to go ahead and hit the publish button while the wifi is working. More later, maybe.
Another day another shooting this time at a parade, there will be no joy, this country is sick.
O.T. I really wish msnbc would stop putting these washed up GOP'er types on the air (Charlie Sykes, Tim Miller, Charlie Dent). They go on and on about how the GOP use to stand for something, law and order, national security, supporting NATO, free trade, etc. Bullshit, the GOP has never stood for one goddamn thing other than dividing people to win elections. I'm 63 and in my lifetime the only thing the GOP has ever been is one big fat fucking slogan after another.
You nailed it! "Divide and conquer" – exactly, that is the sum total of their skillset and they do it masterfully, with media cooperation.
In Early 21st Century America, how can we call an event a celebration without some murderous gun-play?
Celebrating a sports championship? It's not a celebration without a minimum of a dozen wounded, and at least a coupla DOA's!
A wedding celebration? Well, OK then, NOW we're talkin'! You need dozens wounded and a handful killed – from MULTIPLE families. No dead? The wedding wasn't celebratory enough!
If you're not a gun aficionado, then you're NOT a real American!!!!!
I HATE guns!
So I guess that makes me a Commie, or a Socialist, or some other derogatory label.
Yeah, I predicted that Jck would file on Friday if not sooner. I was not wrong, but not close, either. When he says this needs to go quickly, he puts his money where his mouth is. Both Trump ND sMITH re treading in areas that are unusual, if not unique in legal arguments. That is, on the reasons behind the urgency or the reasons for delay.
Trump argued in fairly open terms that a trial would interfere with his campaigning, But he speaketh with forked tongue because that's joined with a hint Trump might want the full appellate court to hear before the USSC does. Since another hearing would be appealed, the ONLY difference is the time that's wasted.
The way I read Trump's pitch to the USSC is a beg for them to cooperate in a conspiracy to delay. Trump doesn't seem to think he has any chance of winning with the Supremes or he'd be arguing to move the case ASAP. I expect that Roberts will ask for a response from Trump to Smith's brief, with a time limit. A week, maybe less considering how fast Smith responded. The reply from Trump should address what Smith said about where we should go from here.
I read over what Smith proposed – first, a denial because there's not a snowball's chance in hell of a reversal. Second, if the Supremes do agree to hear the case, do it on an expedited schedule, hearing arguments next month. This must be the focus of Trump's response – he has to justify why the court should drag this out.
I read over what Trump submitted on Monday. One of his arguments was that a trial will take Trump from campaigning for months during the presidential election and this is somehow a First Amendment violation that injures the MAGA crowds who would want to hear Trump. In poker, this is called a "tell." If the Supremes entertained the concept that there's a special unwritten extension of the First Amendment that covers a candidate for POTUS until after an election if he loses the election. Setting aside how ridiculous it is, the goal of delaying until after the election becomes the clear strategy for a trial in which they don't have a legal defense.
The Supremes could drag this out but why would they? If they refuse the case, they get less blame from MAGA than if they hear it and tell Trump there's no such thing as immunity for Citizen Trump. I still say the outcome is certain – the question is when.
"The Supremes could drag this out but why would they?"
One simple reason, 6-3 GOP!
"6-3 GOP" Disagree.
The Supremes have struck down the GOP repeatedly this year in vital election issues like gerrymandering. I'd have to do my homework but the USSC has already given the House to the Democrats with equitable decisions.
Trump has announced mass deportation from the first day he takes office. Absolutely in violation of the law. Trump can't just suspend the law by presidential decree but he's gonna do it. Trump KNOWS that the ACLU will file against him within minutes of his edict in a jurisdiction likely to freeze Trump's order. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that the DOJ under a Trump toadie will order ICE and Border Patrol to ignore the federal order.
The officials who follow the court order will be fired and replaced within minutes. The handwriting will be on the wall. This time, Trump won't wait. It won't be the fourth year when Trump exercises dictatorial power. Trump's gonna be in the judicial meat-grinder for all of this year, while the machinery turns. Once POTUS, Trump will gleefully dismantle the apparatus of justice. When the paper gets to the USSC, the handwriting will be on the wall. Anyone who resists Trump will be removed. They can stay as Trumpian rubber stamps or face the brown shirts escorted by DOJ officials.
In Trump's first term there was no reason for the Supremes to expect that Trump would ignore the Constitution and the law. In the transfer of power, Trump did. It was a month's long conspiracy that involved dozens of people, the fraudulent submission of fake documents, and cooperation by members of Congress. Many of the facts are in the public record though they have not been adjudicated in a criminal court. That's entirely the point and of all people, the Justices of the Supreme Court should appreciate it.
I don't agree with many of the decisions by conservatives on the Court. I don't agree with Liz Cheney. I don't like Mitt Romney very much. But these conservatives believe in the Constitution, though they'd exercise power differently than you or I. I take great hope in the fact that Trump does not have confidence the USSC will side with him. That's why he's not asking them to decide – only to delay.
I have zero confidence in five of the six USSC justices, Roberts has shown glimpses of integrity on occasion. If they had any integrity the three supreme's that Stump put on the court would recuse how can their decision be considered unbiased? Thomas should recuse (actually he should resign) given Ginny's complicity in the attempted coup. The fact as you say that Stump is only seeking delay is exactly why the court is likely to grant it. If they can delay the trial past the election then the decision really is meaningless either way. The only real purpose of this trial is to expose Stumps crimes before those so called "swing voters" go to the polls in November. A guilty verdict before November should likely cost him the election. But lets be real Stump is not going to jail, if he wins the election the case gets tossed, if he loses and is found guilty he's going to get some sort of arranged confinement at one of his trash palaces. I see the GOP as almost entirely corrupt, from the house to the senate to the courts they are only interested in obtaining and holding onto power, if the last 20 years hasn't taught us that then I'm not sure what would.
I'm loving the fact that Trump turned the RNC into a wholly owned subsidiary of himself. This means no $ for Republican candidates, all resources will be instead be diverted to paying Trump's legal bills, which are only going to escalate in 2024. All that "delay, delay, delay" and filing appeal after appeal costs $$$. Just wait till the trials start. This is the best thing that ever happened to the Democratic Party.
Absolutely – ETTD, and I am all for him maintaining his iron grip on them at this point, rock on dude! Its amazing what he can do with those tiny hands; one around their collective necks while the other relentlessly digs into their pockets. Let him do for the entire GOP what he has done for Giuliani and Pillow Guy and countless others.
And this directly relates back to Uncledad's post at the top; "dividing people to win elections". Thanks to the domination of Donnie Small Hands the GQP is fully engaged in dividing itself to lose elections.
