Stuff to Read

I’m writing something on a deadline and need to get back to it, but here is some stuff to read.

I almost had a stroke myself when I read that John Fetterman had a stroke on Friday. I’m pulling for Fetterman to be the next U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. But it sounds like what he had was more like a TIA, what I had a few weeks ago, and he should be fine. If it’s what I had he’s probably bone tired right now, but functional.

Headlines around the country are connecting the Buffalo shooting to white supremacy, Fox News, and the Republican Party. A samplng:

Greg Sargent, Washington Post, A Fringe Conspiracy Theory, Fostered Online, Is Refashioned by the G.O.P.

There’s also this:

Matt Shuham, Talking Points Memo, Proponents Of Racist ‘Replacement’ Theory That Motivated Mass Shooter Double Down

There was also a shooting in Laguna Woods, California, yesterday. One dead, five wounded. This was at a Taiwanese Episcopal Church, and the victims are all Asian. I’d say that qualifies as a racist hate crime, also. As the shooter was reloading the pastor smacked him in the head with a chair and congregates tackled and hogtied him, or it would have been worse.

Elsewhere,

Frank Langfitt, NPR, Finland and Sweden announce they want to join NATO, marking a big blow to Putin. Yeah, take that, Vlad.

File this next one under “but the leak is the real story!”

Ian Millhiser, Vox, The Supreme Court just made it much easier to bribe a member of Congress and Paul Blumenthal and Elise Foley, Huffpost, The Supreme Court Makes Ted Cruz A Half-Million Dollars Richer. But they get so sad when you call them “political hacks.”

  1. The California church mass shooting will probably not be charged as a hate crime.  The shooter's name is David Chou. He is an ethnic Chinese who previously lived in Taiwan.

The Robert's Court had already made it next to impossible to prosecute politicians for accepting bribes.  Now, the government has to have the quid pro quo openly made on video or have the politician do a Duke Cunningham and have a printed menu of how much bribe amount could buy.

Today's ruling by the Roberts Court opens a major can of worms.  A wealthy politician can 'loan' unlimited amounts of money to his campaign.  He can charge interest on the loans (a nice 20% sounds about right).  He can then pay off the loans with corporate 'campaign donations', including during and after the campaign.

Rafael Cruz is probably wishing he had been charging interest on his 'loans'.

  2. Is it wrong for me to feel that I'd actually prefer it if this Reich-wing "replacement theory" was real, and was actually being put into practice?

I think replacing these bigoted, ignorant, stupid, self-important, nasty-ass Crackers with people from around the world would measurably improve this country, and make it even greater!

    But what do I know?

Wifi issues, so I gotta bye-bye!

  3. “Replacement Theory”? Is that the worst the Republican Party can do? You call that lame-o whinge paranoia? Listen up, and I’ll tell you how existential dread is really done.

For you see, in a mere 2 centuries – a measly 200 years, a blink of history’s eye – every man, woman, child, infant, fetus, and freshly conceived zygote, every one without exception will have completed their life cycles, and be dead and gone. All without exception! And not only everyone now alive, but their children too. There will still be people, but they will all be someone else’s kids.

And not only will everyone alive be replaced, their culture will not be ours either. They will speak different words, with different meanings, pronunciations, spelling, and grammar. Their technology will be radically different, and their economics, and politics, and culture. They will have heard of our culture, but they will misunderstand it. To them we’ll be quaint.

100% demographic turnover, plus major cultural turnover: how’s that for a great replacement? And here’s the cream of the jest: that’s normal! 100% replacement is how the biosphere works! Whoever has a problem with that has bigger problems than immigration policy. Their problem is with something called the human condition.

Wait, the incels are worried about skin tint? How superficial! Listen up: no-one has white skin; everyone has white bones.

“Great Replacement”? SMH. What a bunch of losers!
