I hope the coup paves the way for a better government.
I take it cable news, especially CNN, is being slammed for ignoring Egypt and providing live coverage of the Zimmerman trial instead. I haven’t been watching, but I understand it’s a messy business. One witness who tried to testify via Skype got Skype-bombed.
On one of MSNBC’s shows yesterday, I watched Richard Engel say that there’s a possibility that this latest series of demonstrations, leading to yesterday’s ouster of Morsi (Morsy?), may result in a secular government (sorry, I couldn’t find any links – and btw, NBC’s website sucks).
He said that with the failure of The Muslim Brotherhood over the last year, and the fact that the General showed up with both the Coptic Christian leader, and the leaders of several Islamic sects, that that may be proof of that.
I would certainly hope for something like that.
But I won’t hold my breath, since, if there are really going to be real democratic elections, how do you prevent another religious group getting power?
Now, certainly there’s a possibility that the people of Egypt, having looked around at all of the Muslim Theocratic regimes in the region, and seen how the only beneficiaries are the members of that sect, at the exclusion of most of others, will try to turn to more secular leadership, but I don’t know that that kind of leader and party, exist.
I’m certainly no expert on Egypt, and Engel knows that region extremely well, and his reporting has always been solid, so, at least we can hope for that conclusion – for a while.
As with everything else, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Meanwhile, our own Christian Theocrats, are turning American states into hot messes – see, NC, OH, TX, KS, etc.
Yeah, CUND GULAG… I just wish the American founders had seen fit to include a clause in the US Constitution guaranteeing Freedom of Religion. Looks like Egypt may beat us to that.
I remember reading the difference between a cult and a religion is a cult owns less property. Scientology might be pushing that boundary.
Fundies everywhere are a problem everywhere. Why anyone thinks the garbage service and the tax collection system need to connect to the church, I cannot fathom. Of course, I said “thinks”, when I meant “believes”.
