As Steve M noted, it was that senile old fool, Ronald Reagan – aka: Noonan’s unrequited love *sigh* – who first started this “saluting” back nonsense.
Presidents who actually fought in The Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, The War for Texas Independence (why didn’t they just leave ‘well-enough,’ along? *my own sigh*), The Civil War, The Spanish American War, WWI, and WWII, never saluted back, when the people in the military saluted them.
No, it took St. Ronnie of Alzheimer’s, who play-acted at being a soldier in Hollywood movies, who first saluted them back.
The ultimate farce here, is that W felt that – as the “War Presnit,” and Komnader ‘n Cheef” – he’d “salute” the troops back, best, by having a pilot fly him in on a jet, and land him on an aircraft carrier, wearing a flight suit with the world’s largest kielbasa stuffed in his boxers, to ‘strut his hour upon the stage.”
Which turned out to be, ‘a tale told about an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing’ – at least, not signifying anything even vaguely resembling, “Mission Accomplished!”
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – if President Obama could walk on the water, our Reich-wingers would say, ‘Yeah, so what? It’s ’cause he either don’t know how, or the Nigrah’s too lazy, to swim.”
I guess we can now add “Salute-gate,” to “Benghazi-gate,” “Umbrella-gate,” “IRS-gate,” “AP-gate,” “FOX Reporter-gate” (and remember, these “gates” are just the “gates” they’ve added to events since the end of April of 2013 – not even a full month ago!) and all of the other things they’ve added the suffix “gate” to, ever since President Obama was first inaugurated back in January of 2009.
I don’t suppose our Reich-wingers have ever heard the story about “The Boy Who Cried ‘Wolf-gate!'”
As the article points out, the President DID act correctly.
Well, he might not be up on his military protocols, but when it comes to trampling on the Constitution…he’s got no equal.
I don’t really blame him for not knowing how or when to salute, after all, what do you expect from a Kenyan usurper?
These idiots don’t seem to get who works for who. The Commander in Chief can salute or not as he damn well pleases.
I’m sure there must be a rush of Marines asking to be transferred OFF the Presidential detail, what with him making them hold umbrellas and not returning salutes and instead coming back down the stairs to shake hands and chat and what not. What self-respecting Marine would put up with that kind of disrespect?
Personally, as a guy with a certain fondness for the principle of civilian control of the military personified in the President not wearing a uniform, I think it proper that the President not return the salute in such situations. But I have better things to worry about than ceremonial protocol for boarding helicopters.
I think my response to the next winger who complains about some protocol gaffe by Obama is going to be “Yeah, and how many toddlers shot themselves today with a gun left lying around by some dumba@@,thanks to the NRA?”
Bush used to autograph American flags (a BIG flag protocol no-no) and the rightards didn’t care one whit. This is more hypocritical outrage ambulance-chasing from the idiot chorus.
One saluting protocol that I’m not sure of is when a funeral procession carrying the remains of one of Bush’s victims who were killed in Iraq was passing by on the way to the cemetery, do I as a veteran salute the hearse, or is it proper to just stand at attention to show my respect to a fallen comrade.
It wasn’t so much the lack of a salute , but the secret Muslim hand shake that got ’em all fired up. I smell impeachment……BENGHAZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!
More, “For Shame” – Shame on R&R for calling Paul Krugman, “uncivil” when he criticizes them, and their paper which called for Austerity:
