"Barbara O’Brien’s wide-ranging account of Zen history is conveyed with a master storyteller’s ability to keep the forest from getting lost in a myriad of trees. Wearing her scholarship lightly, she blends just the right amount of skepticism about her hagiographic sources with a deep appreciation for the Dharma." — Barry Magid, author of

I agree, you do need some time off. You put a lot of work into your posts. Hope you have some fun this weekend. Looks like perfect weather for some time outdoors. (I’m having a guest for part of the weekend — a friend is coming up from Baltimore to hang out, visit with me and another friend.)
I’m off to my sisters today for a family picnic.
I regret having read “Tom Sawyer” to her (in Russian, no less) when we were kids. My parents and I are making most of the food.
Enjoy the weekend maha. Everyone else. Also. Too…
re vacations – I recommend a month away from all (political) blogs. I did this a couple months ago, and it was amazing how much mental real estate got freed up, and how much greater my peace of mind was. It greatly increased my ability to feel love for my fellow human, no matter what their politics. It was like being released from a multi-year nightmare. Hatred and anger are debilitating emotions that literally age us, as we give away our energy. I plan to do more of this.
Amen, Moonbat. Happy long weekend to all.
Okay, my sentimental Eastern European soul bubbled to the surface and misted up my glasses.
Thanks for the article at the Buddhist site. It encouraged me savor a time tested way to experience sympathetic joy. I took my wonderful, aging Bluetick Hound, Marley out for an unhurried walk in the woods. The joy of a dog is wonderfully infectious, especially Marley’s.
However you want to vacation, you have earned it.
I was just talking to my very good friend, Nadine Priester. She had a clever original quip. “We all knew we were living in the belly of the beast. We just didn’t know how hungry it was.” She deserves a few minutes of fame for that.
