You’ve probably heard about the bigoted “raghead” remark recently made by a South Carolina state senator. I have a comment about it on the other blog.

Not long after 9/11, I returned home from a job at a local water park where I had to burn off some steel piles underwater. I was lying on the couch with a blinding headache, when I realized I needed to run to the hardware store for some items to finish the job the next day. I started down the road, and noticed two bearded guys in blue turbans trying to flag down passing cars. Lucky for them, I recognized them as Sikhs, having once visited Singapore, where the Airport security is mostly Sikh.
I stoped on the median and asked them what was up, the one who spoke english said they missed their bus, and asked for a ride to the mall to catch a connecting bus to their hotel. I said I said I’d do them one better, and drive them directly to their hotel. along the way, they told me they were from Delhi visiting relatives, I told them to be VERY careful because most in our area might think they are terrorists because of the beards and turbans.
Suddenly, I realized I had a police car on my tail. I sported an anti Bush bumpersticker at the time, my van contained 2 oxygen cylinders and assorted equipment for underwater burning, and two bearded, turbaned young men.
A police stop under those circumstances would have proved “delicate” to say the least. The cop was so close that I could his displeasure with my bumpersticker; luckily, he didn’t stop me, and I delivered my passengers to their hotel. The passenger who didn’t speak English offered me his hand to shake, and said “Good Luck!”.
I drove away shaking my achy head……….
I told my wife what happened her response was WTF were you thinking?
I think I may have prevented a sad ending for the Sikh guys.
That’s one of three of my “rag head” storys
The plus side is the overtly boorish behavior of the GOP from South Carolina and from Rand Paul in Tennessee will not serve them well as the days of white males being the majority succumb to demographics.
