Post Oscar

This is brilliant (h/t Jeff F):

I missed the Oscars themselves, but I have now waded through three photo galleries of The Dresses. Mostly everyone looked very nice. “Howevers”: The critics loved Maggie Gyllenhaal’s gown, which to me looked like wrap made out of a beach towel. Kate Winslet’s dress, which also drew many comments of admiration, looked like the foundation of a Valkyrie costume; add a cape, a spear, and a horn helmet, and she’d have been ready for Wagner. Note: I’m tired of hard bustier bodices. Miley Cyrus needs posture lessons. Today Sarah Jessica Parker probably wishes she had worn something else. But I guess the days when Cher would show up in Bob Mackey showgirl beads and feathers are over.

  1. I actually liked the beach towel look on Maggie because it was a refreshment from all the draped fabric and beaded bodices. Yes, Winslet’s gown was very disappointing, did she already wear that once? I got to watch the show and was mildly surprised that it was pretty good and never got into those long boring spots. Steve Martin and the Baldwin guy were very amusing, there was the “moment” with the Prudence thingy (never sure what that was) fighting co-directors I think..very refreshing, memories of Marlon Brando “not” accepting the oscar many years ago. Yes, I too missed the ‘dress’ that would rock the fashion pages…no tutus, no swans, will no one ever be able to compete with Cher? And, by the way, call me crazy, but I really liked the white “backward” suit that Celine wore that year. Kat

It is the only award show I watch annually and overall, I’m sorry you missed it Maha. One more note on the fashion thingy…it was fun watching all the female presenters walking in their extra long fabricky gowns….I kept waiting for that one moment that never came….clunky shoes and all, they all managed to not fall. By the way, my winner for best designer is Vera Wang for the gown worn by Mariska Hargitay.

It was a thrill to see Cameron’s ex win the director Oscar, I love history-making events, don’t you? I saw Avatar, hated it, and was prepared to never watch another Oscar show if it won Best Picture. The Oscar has been redeemed once again. Anyone hear why Farrah Fawcell was left off the “In Memoriam” piece. Well, back to the gloom and doom of daily politics and the state of the nation, the Oscars were a refreshing break.

  2. Great video, great upshot of the formulaic nature of Hollywood movies. They did a wonderful job lampooning the formulaic dialog by using meta dialog, which reminds me of a wonderful earlier work by Steven Soderberg, Schizopolis. I wish they could’ve lampooned the music as well. From Schizopolis:

    Husband: Generic greeting!

    Wife: Generic greeting returned!

    and on and on.
