WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Clinton urged Congress Tuesday to act swiftly in developing anti-terrorism legislation before its August recess.

“We need to keep this country together right now. We need to focus on this terrorism issue,” Clinton said during a White House news conference.

But while the president pushed for quick legislation, Republican lawmakers hardened their stance against some of the proposed anti-terrorism measures.

And this blast from the past from April 2001 cannot be repeated often enough (CNN Transcript):

The State Department officially released its annual terrorism report just a little more than an hour ago, but unlike last year, there’s no extensive mention of alleged terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. A senior State Department official tells CNN the U.S. government made a mistake in focusing so much energy on bin Laden and “personalizing terrorism.”

Still, Secretary of State Colin Powell says efforts to fight global terrorism will remain consistent.

POWELL: The results are clear: state sponsors of terrorism are increasingly isolated; terrorist groups on under growing pressure. Terrorists are being brought to justice, we will not let up. But we must also be aware of the nature of the threat before us. Terrorism is a persistent disease.

  1. You should have the other blogs dig this on the CNN report by the State Dept. saying they were not going to focus so much on terror and Bin Laden. This really needs to go out and somehow get pounded at the MSM until they are forced to make it known to the general public in more than a blurb, just once in the middle of the night. But, talked about. This is Tres Important.
    Please.

  2. I sent the following to the ABC address listed below. ABC has a 500 character limit so it took two mailings.

I faithfully watch the ABC Evening News w/ Mr. Gibson plus the Weekend news. I am ending my long association w/ ABC News b/c of the fake-u-drama “The Path to 9/11” due to air on Sep 10/11.

As far as I’m concerned, when the State Dept in April 2001 takes bin Laden off the terrorist watch list the resultant disaster falls on Mr. Bush’s shoulders.

In parallel w/ the last para, is the fact that only Limbaugh and other neo-con fifth columnists got to initially review the film to get positive buzz is an attempt to influence the Nov midterm elections in favor of the cabal currently in power.

I intend to write all major advertisers on all ABC shows I can see, telling them of what I call “despicable conduct” on ABC’s part.

  3. Beware of a ‘hurry’ to pass anything in the fall before an election. Remember we had to have a patriot act real fast Remember we had to have an aumf to attack Iraq real fast before it was acknowledged that North Korea had the nuclear threat not Saddam? Everytime they are in a big hurry to push something they are up to no good like a damn car salesman.
