Juan Cole is a very smart man.
Liberty City is a very dangerous place due to the poverty from unemployment, associated drug activity, and , sadly, because some of the inhabitants do consider whites as “the devil”.
In the mid 90’s, I was on assignment in Miami, and was more than a bit clueless regarding the “west side” of I-95.I was on my way back to my hotel, noticed a sign for a grocery store, and got off the interstate to pick up some bread and milk for the next day… big mistake. My assistant and I were the only whites in the store, we were glared at constantly, the check out lady was very rude, then as we left, a black security guard ran up to us and suggested we leave as quickly as possible, we promptly obliged.A pair of German tourists were murdered the previous week in the same parking lot when they stopped for a few items.
The very next day, an armored truck rolled over in an accident in Liberty City spilling a large amount of change and cash which was promptly grabbed up by the locals. When asked to return the money, one woman exclaimed the money was sent by Jesus, little if any was recovered.
Since that time, I have done some work in Liberty City, and was required to have a police escort.I did not feel threatened during daylight hrs, but after Hurricane Wilma last year, a number of utility workers were held up at gunpoint.
Hurricane Wilma caused widespread power failures in Miami for up to 2 weeks.Gas and food were not easy to get, and in Miami, where driving is tough on a good day, getting around was worse because of downed power lines and non working traffic lights.
When Hurricanes strike, the well to do can get out of town, but the poor do what they must.
I figured the Liberty City Al Qaida connection was bullshit, and it looks like the Atty. General stepped in a big pile of it.
