The wingnut echo chamber has decided that judicial activism is ordained by the Constitution, and if President Muslim Pretender doesn’t like it when SCOTUS ignores its own precedents and overturns a law for the benefit of Team Republican, he must not understand Marbury v. Madison. Seriously.
That said — here is the text of the President’s speech today, and I have no doubt he is laying out the theme for his re-election campaign here. The “social Darwinism” remark may have been one of the nicer things he said about the other party.
I haven’t read the links yet to understand the story, but I have to comment off the bat that the word Darwinism is designed to get somebody in a swarm. It’s a loaded word!
Yeah, the dingbats are just going to respond with “social intelligent design” (as if that middle word has no meaning).
I’ve always found it ironic that Republicans who go on and on about how evolution is evil, and yet they have no problem at all with “Social Darwinism.” “Survival of the fittest” was a phrase coined by Herbert Spencer– NOT by Darwin, who was horrified by the notion of taking observations in biology and using it as the basis for a moral and economic imperative. Centuries of all kinds of mental gymnastics to justify greed…
I read most of the speech, and my reaction is that Obama really “gets it”.
The right thing to do is to challenge the wealthy to step up to the plate and save their country. If we can ask 20 somethings to go to WAR, fuck it, we can ask the wealthy to pay their fair share and MORE. I’m willing to, even though I’m barely squeeking by each month
This is the president I’ve been wanting to see for three years, well, at least since the Republicans took back the Senate. And by that I mean when Teddy died and then by some complete backassward thing happens and a repug takes his spot which then meant that the repugs had 41 outta 100 in the Senate and could stop everything.
But Barack is using the language of the middle-class and OWS and I think it’s a winner.
Obama probably can’t, but I would call it the ‘Rush-ian Strategy’ – survival of the fat-cattiest.
The problem with using “Social Darwinism,” an evolutionary term, in America, is that polling shows us that almost as high a percentage believe evolution it is ‘false,’ as believe it’s true.
In some polls – more believe it’s false.
A much lower percentage than even a decade or two ago.
And isn’t de-evolution, in and of itself, proof that evolution is real?
