What Did I Miss?

Did anyone see Bush’s “speech” tonight? I understand it was kept to 8 minutes. They really don’t want him around, do they?

When I got home from Tuesday night chorus rehearsal they were showing a tribute to Reagan. How many years will it take for them to get past Reagan? I realize the Dems had a tribute to the Kennedys, but that’s because there was a Kennedy on the stage.

I watched Thompson with the sound off. He’s much better that way.

Looking at the conventioneers reminds me of the folks back home. All white.

Oo, Lieberman’s up. TV off.

Anyway, I’m going to break my own rule here and say something about the Palins and their pregnancies. Via Atrios, the National Enquirer is reporting that Sarah Palin was planning to marry Bristol off to her boyfriend right after the convention and then announce the pregnancy. But Bristol refused to go along with this plan, it says.

Has anyone asked Bristol if she wants to marry the kid she messed around with? Maybe she doesn’t. If so, that would tell me she has more sense than her whackjob mother. Who the hell outside of Arkansas marries off 17-year-olds these days, even if the girl is pregnant? They might as well pay for the wedding and divorce in one package deal. It would save both those children, and the baby, a lot of grief.

Right now I’m too tired to go through all the Palin family dramas that have turned up just today. The biggies: The Palin’s association with an extremist, anti-American secessionist movement; as governor, Palin slashed money for teen moms; just three months ago, Palin called the Iraq war a messianic affair in which the United States could do the will of the Lord.

Sarah Palin — the gift (to the Dems) that keeps on giving —

I’m beginning to think the “Eagleton Scenario” is possible. If … nay, when … Palin becomes too big a drag on the ticket, they could dump her and blame the evil liberal media and liberal bloggers for being mean.

Maybe we should lay off and encourage her to stay on the ticket.

  1. “Sarah Palin — the gift (to the Dems) that keeps on giving.”

Yep. I was just thinking that I’ve never seen a politician who had so many “gates” right out of the gate.

  2. Yes, I know that wonkette.com is the nadir of evil juvenile political incorrectness, but with all the preachy Righties that’ve shown up at the mahablog door lately, I just had to go watch them liveblog Foghorn Leghorn and Homunculus Joe.

Totally worth it. Almost felt like I was in the Xcel Center. With an IV pole of margaritas.

I’m beginning to think the “Eagleton Scenario” is possible.
HuffPo mentions a website where you can plunk down $12, and collect $100 if Gov. Palin’s off the ticket before Nov. 4th. What is that, 8.5-to-1 odds?

I agree, though, her drag coefficient is probably more valuable.

(Now picturing Michael Palin in a dress. Or maybe Tina Fey as Sarah P, and Michael P in his lumberjack outfit. Oh never mind.)

  3. Regarding “Palin slashed money for teen moms”, as it turns out, the non-profit got almost four times from Alaska alone as they’d received from all gov’t sources in 2006. Details at my name’s link.

Next time, remember: think first, post second.

  4. Palin dropping out of the race wouldn’t just give them a chance to blame the liberal blogs for beaing mean; they could also bleat self-righteously about how this means that women just aren’t cut out for a position of that level of responsibility – thus allowing them to use her as a weapon against Hillary Clinton in yet another appalling way.

  5. “Maybe we should lay off and encourage her to stay on the ticket”

Well, (for me) she IS easier on the eyes than Lieberman.(sorry girls, all us boys are pigs just below the surface)
When I read stuff about her I’m never quite sure if I’m reading “The Onion” or “real” news.

We could have some fun by holding a contest to name that new baby, Palin and hubby have been pretty creative, giving the African-American community a run for their money in the creative child naming arena.( I’m pullin’ for Colt, Mack 10, or Winchester if it’s a boy;Juno ,Haida,or Mendenhall if a girl)
At any rate, the saga of “The Maverick and the MILF” continues, and so does our crazy culture of war and gossip.I’m considering starting my own non-profit organization so I can get me some prescription drugs to get me through this time in history, just like Cindy .
If Michelle Obama did what these republican girls did, the world would be spinnin’ backwards.
    God bless us all…………

  6. #3, the details: I looked at the details’ “proof” and it was all confusion; various forms mixing apples and oranges with no line-by-line comparison between 2006 and 2007. If you want to look and see if it makes sense to you, be my guest.

  7. Lieberman in his speech at the RNC showed his cards last night, and came up short of a pair.

I watched him until I couldn’t stand it, then watched the summaries on MSNBC and CNN.

    Some points:

    1. Joe referred to himself as a “Democrat” which, given his current Independent standing, must have had Connecticut Democrats spitting acid…

    2. He tore at Obama’s lack of experience (“Senator Obama is a gifted and eloquent young man who can do great things for our country in the years ahead. But eloquence is no substitute for a record — not in these tough times.”), making that the reason to vote for his buddy McCain, then completely reversed himself by building up Palin (“She’s taken on the special interests and the political power brokers in Alaska, and reached across party lines to get things done. The truth is, she is a leader we can count on to help John shake up Washington”), probably the most inexperienced candidate ever run for high national office.

The Dallas Morning News pointed out:

As Democratic superdelegate and CNN commentator Donna Brazile noted, Lieberman agrees with Obama on “95 percent” of the issues. You have to figure he disagrees with Palin on about 99 percent of issues. And that makes the praise of Palin tough for his Senate Democratic colleagues to stomach…

    3. Lieberman lied about Obama’s Senate activities (“In the — in the Senate, during the three-and-a-half years that Senator Obama’s been a member, he has not reached across party lines to accomplish anything significant, nor has he been willing to take on powerful interest groups in the Democratic Party to get something done”), when it’s clear that Barack has often worked with Republicans like Lugar and even McCain…

The fact that McCain did not give Lieberman the VP nomination (as he wanted to) probably kept Holy Joe from delivering a complete Zell Miller. Perhaps he is still making a pitch for Secretary of State or Defense in a McCain Administration.

One thing is pretty sure, though… he has alienated his former Democratic colleagues once and for all and it is interesting to consider what Harry Reid will do with his committee chairmanship after the election (assuming a McCain loss, which will leave no administration post open). My guess is that Joe will close out his Senate career either as a zombie or a Republican… but, hey, what’s the difference?

  8. erinyes, no offense taken here. Joe L is terrifying to look upon.

maha, so it’s true, then. The devil is in “the details.” Too bad McCain wasn’t interested in those pesky things.

  9. I listened to bits of Thompson during Star Wars commercials. My favorite part was when he said that we needed McCain to address this long list of wrongs, including a run-away deficit that was going to ruin the country for our children, and the delegates cheered, and I shouted “What!?!?” at the TV. I guess they’re blaming the deficit on those damned tax-and-spend liberals that have been running the country these last eight years… oh, wait.

This, if anything, proves that righties have no reasoning or logic.

I’m like you, Maha. Soon as Lieberman stepped onto the stage, TV off.

  10. Did anyone see Bush’s “speech” tonight? I understand it was kept to 8 minutes. They really don’t want him around, do they?

They started it before 10:00 EST, so he’d be half-finished before the broadcast networks’ coverage started. Unfortunately for them, the nets showed the whole thing on tape delay.

  11. I did watch TV last night, but only the Law and Order marathon. I guess I will admit to switching to the thing during commercials, 2 minute chunks is enough time to make a few observations:

    1) Fred Thompson on the spot is not nearly as interesting as he is on Law and Order with rehearsals and multiple takes! He couldn’t read that teleprompter to save a million dollars. The substance of his speech appeared to be complaining about deficits in the face of the collapse of the middle class. Honestly, from my four minutes of viewing it could have been a Democrats speech!
    2) Joe L. What on earth is he thinking? I was always puzzled by his choice as Gore’s VP in 2000, but I never thought he was completely off his rocker. He has lost any semblance of mental capacity that used to be there.
    3) The background of those two speeches was sky blue with an American flag. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that a bit too trivial and nationalistic?
    4) Old RayGun (Saint Ronnie?) was back. Yep, President RayGun, he shot some rays and ended the soviet union! He also cut some taxes and never got around to cutting government services, and gave us a debt that will cripple our future.

I don’t know about you, but I wish they would quit it.

  12. King George — Lieberman makes no sense to me either. Of all the times to switch parties, he switches to the party that’s on its way out?

Re the American flag backdrop — the whole production somehow looked shabby and rinkydink compared to what the Dems did. Usually the Republicans put on a better show.

  13. Abstinence-only education doesn’t work. Statistical proof here:

    http://www.mathematica-mpr.com/publications/PDFs/impactabstinence.pdf

Check out pages xvii to xix. This is what bupkiss looks like. And it only cost a billion dollars.

I was thinking, the R’s advocate abstinence-only education ‘even though’ it doesn’t work; then I slapped my foolish head and said, “No, no, they advocate it ‘because’ it doesn’t work!” So now we see that unprotected premarital sex, teen pregnancy, and shotgun weddings ARE Republican traditional values! It’s what they’re _for_!

  14. I heard the ABA & Trial Lawyers Association are asking Sara Palin be allotted some time to give Cheney shooting & hunter safety training. After Janunary, he’s gonna have a lot more time on his hands, and they don’t want to lose any more lawyers.
