The RNC Begins

Apparently the GOP didn’t want the nation to get a close look at Cindy McCain. She was hustled on and off the stage in St. Paul very early in the evening, way not prime time. I could snark about her shiny gold suit, but that would be sexist.

MSNBC reports that police used tear gas on protesters at the RNC convention. So is Little Lulu covering this as tightly as she covered protests in Denver? Of course not.

However, Little Lulu does want us to leave Bristol Palin alone. I didn’t know anyone was bothering her. It’s her mother we’re bothering.

I called the last post “GOP Tries to Hide Behind Hurricane.” I’m thinking Gustav isn’t a big enough hurricane for them to hide behind. That could change; we’re not out of danger, especially from floods. But I think most of the nation is still disgusted about Katrina, and the GOP dog and pony show of concern about a less serious storm is just a reminder.

I’m not well versed on the Book of Revelation, but in case this is a sign of the Apocalypse, today Sen. Obama pretty much insisted the same thing.

I’m cool with that. I think TrooperGate’s gonna do Palin in, anyway. Lawyering up is a sure sign the end is near. (Well, OK, it used to be, pre-Dubya.)

Not having cable or satellite, I have to triangulate the doings at the RNC via various websites, but… are they already done for today? That was the impression I got. Hmm, maybe I better switch on PBS and see if suddenly they’re showing a 3-hour opera.

Also, what percentage of seats in the convention hall looked to be empty?

  2. moonbat — Amy Goodman? Holy crow. But you know what the wingnuts will say — if she was arrested, she must have been guilty of something.

  3. Cindy’s dress looked like it belonged to Jane Jetson. Perfect for that 1960 ‘s swinging soirée.

  4. I think TrooperGate’s gonna do Palin in, anyway.

I agree, joanr16. If Monegan files a lawsuit against her, regardless of what an investigation turns up…she’ll be done. And Monegan doesn’t have to wait on the conclusion of the investigation to strike. The sword of Damocles? Palin could be as pure as snow, but the liability the accusation carries can be/ will be crippling.

  5. The baby-gate rumors were fun while they lasted, but it’s just as well that Obama says lay off. It leaves behind this tasty – but entirely fitting – snark: Mrs. Palin, does abstinence-only education work? Statistical studies say it doesn’t…

  6. I used to be a regular contributor here – about two years ago, I think.
After visiting your site now, I feel ill. How can you people live with yourselves?

  7. How can you people live with yourselves?

I tried living apart from myself for awhile, but it didn’t work out. Everywhere I go, there I am.

  8. Did Samiam join a cult or something?

I’ve been around since the 2004 elections, and I sure don’t remember him.

  9. Ah, yes. I remember your humor. It’s one of the reasons I stuck with you for about a year. You were the first blog I ever participated on. I heard you on C-span with Brian Lamb. I’d been a staunch liberal Democrat all my life. You were a major contributor to my slow but steady journey to the Republican right as your blog became more and more bitter.
Personally, I’m much happier now. Thanks for the prod.

  10. Ultimately, you are correct of course. And I didn’t intend to lay out my story.
I was struggling over here to ask for a kinder, gentler tone to the discussion but I was actually getting high blood pressure. I started to hang out on the more moderate blogs and I felt more at home and gradually underwent a conversion of sorts. I have always liked down home conservative types, even though I didn’t agree with their politics. Now that I’m older, I see where they are coming from and I tend to agree more with their point of view. My schooling was California Liberal, and Berkeley! but I also lived in Wyoming for a time and felt a real affinity for the pioneer/rancher types. They like their government to stay out of their way and they do just fine. I admire them very much. I’m sure they’re much the same up in Alaska, too.
Anyway, I hang out at the Anchoress now (even though I’m not Catholic) and I admire her, too.
    C’est la vie.

  11. Gee, did Little Lulu weigh in when John McCain went after Chelsea Clinton? Chelsea was a mite younger than 17 at the time, as I recall.

Anyone who dumps on a minor child of a politician is beneath contempt, I don’t care which side of the divide they are on. And that goes for you, John McCain, and everyone who laughed at your tasteless joke.

    Hypocracy, thy name is GOP.

  12. Hi joanr,

I’m a she. I was also using Sam. And no I didn’t join a cult. Thanks for the smear.
I don’t know if you can access the archives, but I was actively backing up Maha when she was being attacked by the anti-religious types. I don’t know if you remember that. We went over to some other blog (Glen’s?) when she was a guest host. (I think that was the situation) Maha was standing her ground with forth the idea that religion (including Buddhism) could be a noble and spiritually enlightening thing and although I was more agnostic at the time, I enthusiastically backed her up.
Religion. Charity. Forgiveness. You know. That kind of thing.

  13. Oh, I get it. That’s the “universe” telling me that it’s time to go. I’ve had my say, I guess. Thanks for listening. I’m going to strike forth and go back from whence I came. 🙂

  14. Weird …. jujst weird. I vaguely recall samiam, and thru the magic of Teh Great Google, went back and reviewed some comments … seemed like a reasonable person at the time (2006 – ish timeframe)

To go from generally liberal to moderately conservative during the past two years is just odd. Conservatives have spent the past eight years proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that they couldn’t actually govern their way out of a wet paper bag … and the brand has been steadily shrionking since 2006 or so.

And while I’m not totally familiar with the Anchoress, my general impression has been that that blog is by no means anything approaching “moderate”. Perhaps I’m wrong there.

    Odd.

  15. Wow, Sam, great time to join the Righties, when most everyone else has figured out what a bunch of morally-bankrupt hypocrites they are.

To borrow a phrase from Sen. Biden, I’m sure you’re “a great American.”

  16. You were a major contributor to my slow but steady journey to the Republican right…

Oh wow, a real honest-to-God Yoosta Bee! I haven’t seen one of those since ’03 or so.

  17. You guys made my day! 🙂
Oh wow, a real honest-to-God Yoosta Bee! I haven’t seen one of those since ‘03 or so.”
I guess you don’t get out much, SamFromUtah. There are quite a few of us out here. I run into them all the time. (To be fair, there are probably a few crossing over the opposite side as well.)
Just shows me how “right” I was! Thanks for the kind words for when I was in your club, though. I’m the same person I always was. Just a lot happier. Honestly, if you ever get sick of the meaness, come on over. The folks are very welcoming and understanding. Many of them used to be just like you.

  18. Oh. And bring an open mind as well. You’ll need one of those. Okay, I’ll leave you alone now. I’ve closed my “chapter” and am ready to “move on”..

  19. OK, so I went over and looked at the Anchoress site, and it looks like an extremely far right site to me … so I take back the bit about samiam being “moderately right-wing” and change that to “far right-wing”.

You know, if samiam is truly happy with her new stance, well I’m happy for her, but I can’t just let that bit about meanness go unchallenged.

The Anchoress appears to be fully locked in to the mainstream of rightwing blogs … just in the first few posts I found approving links to LGF, Flopping Aces, and the others in the old familiar rogue’s gallery.

The thing is, those blogs are almost insanely mean and cruel on a regular basis … LGF in particular is a nearly bottomless cess-pit … collectively, those blogs are consistently WAY WAY more “mean” than nearly any main-stream left-wing blog, and just ridiculously more “mean” than the mahablog.

I’m not saying there aren’t some bad apples on our side too … I’ve never particularly liked Democratic Underground for instance … but to base your decision to align yourself with the main-stream right-wing blogosphere based on the comparitive “meanness” of the main-stream left-wing blogosphere is just, well, factually incorrect. If that’s your measure, you have absolutely no business hanging out at a blog that links to LGF.

  20. Oh, I’ve read The Anchoress. She’s not exactly an original thinker, or a deep one, for that matter. If the Anchoress represents Samiam’s intellectual ideal, I can certainly understand why Samiam doesn’t like this site.

However, one wonders what canker festers in Samiam’s soul that compelled him/her/it to come here to insult me and tell me how “mean” I am. Weird.
